Review: Loving Rosenfeld

I so wanted to love this book. At first, Loving Rosenfeld felt like it was written FOR ME. My fiancé’s name – Rosenfeld. My name is Leann and the authors name? Leighann!

But, while the story was cute and the writing enjoyable, I just couldn’t get past the age gap in the romantic relationship in this book.

Now, don’t get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with age gap romances, and I’ve enjoyed and reviewed a few. But this one…something about it just rubbed me the wrong way. She’s 18, a senior in his school. He’s 36, a reporter at the local paper (oh, and twice her age!).

While the steam in this is mild (a heavy make out session and some light petting), I still couldn’t get past the age gap factor.

I did finish this, though, I wanted to see how the author was going to write this to a conclusion.

I will say, the author captured Ryleigh as a high school senior pretty perfectly, if I remember how I felt as a high school student “in love.” All the angst and fluctuating emotions, as well as the uncertainty of moving away for college and dealing with relationships and friendships in the new phase of life.

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout in exchange for my honest opinion.

Review: Love in Europe

Have you ever read a book and just didn’t feel like you could connect with any of the characters?

That’s how I felt while I was reading Love in Europe. Granted, I loved Barb, a side character who, for me stole every scene she was in and I definitely wanted more of her. But I didn’t feel a connection with Ab or Celine.

What kept me interested was the adventure through Europe and the description of the tours Ab takes her our group on. It had me wishing for better days when I can be traveling through Europe myself.

Thank you to Give Me Books Promotions in exchange for my honest opinion.

What comes next when all your dreams are coming true?

Annabelle has it all. She finally owns her own tourism company and travels the world. She loves her life. But what happens when you have it all, and it’s not enough anymore?

The universe may just have the answer for her…

After a mix-up with another group, she’s stuck with the sexy and brooding Celine for the next few weeks.

After a rough breakup, Celine wants nothing more than to do her job driving tourists around Europe. No matter how hard Celine tries to resist Annabelle, the assertive American, with her quick mouth and sleeve of tattoos, gets under her skin.

Can Annabelle capture Celine’s heart? Or will Celine’s past destroy Annabelle’s dream of love?

Love in Europe is the second in the Love Abroad series and can be read as a standalone book. This FF contemporary romance is filled with laughs, steam and a whole lot of heart!

EXCERPT

The limestone cliffs are jagged and unwelcoming from the boat. The small entrance to the cave is even less welcoming from this view. Celine tenses under my arms, and I squeeze her tighter to me.

“Lean back, everyone, so you do not hit your head on the rocks,” the boat guide instructs.

Celine leans back into me, as I lean into the back of the boat. The oars scraping against the side of the boat are heavy as we head into darkness. We pass under the walls of the cave with inches to spare. The sun disappears as darkness takes over. Inside the cave, bright aquamarine colors dance in the water. Finally able to sit up, we see a few other boats drift lazily in the cave.

“The waters are pristine,” Celine whispers. “Stunning.”

The water reflecting off her face is what’s stunning. She’s still leaning back into me, not quite ready to let go in this tiny cave. Voices echo off the walls as we take in the crystal waters.

“I don’t think the water at the beach is this clear.” The water whirls and sparkles with the motion of the boat. It’s like thousands of gleaming diamonds are floating just beneath the surface. “Thank you for coming with me, Celine. I’m glad I got to experience this place with you,” I whisper softly into her ear.

She grabs my hand and places a kiss in the center of my palm. “I should be thanking you. I get to have all these new and wonderful experiences I wouldn’t have if I was with my usual group.”

Her deep brown eyes are mirrors for the water. Now that we have this thing between us, her eyes give her away. I love seeing how happy she is on this adventure with me. These last few trips, I was left to explore on my own. Or I just stayed near the hotel and did any planning from afar. But having Celine at my side now makes these little side trips infinitely better. I can be carefree with someone at my side.

All I wanted for my seventeenth birthday was a fun night out. But when a knife-wielding psychopath attacks my best friend, of course I try to stop him—and wind up getting myself killed.

Or so I thought.

Next thing I know, I’m waking up to a glaring stranger with piercing red eyes. Jasper is an honest-to-goodness vampire straight out of the movies. He’s inhumanly beautiful, exceptionally strong…and he totally hates my guts.

Seems my near-death experience got me ensnared in a witch’s curse with twelve other paranormals known as the Outcasts. Supposedly, an ancient prophecy says the thirteenth Outcast will be the one to break the curse. That means me. Lucky number thirteen.

As I train to control a dangerous magic I didn’t know I possessed, the more I learn about the Outcasts, Jasper’s attitude, and my connection to the prophecy. And they’re all far more complicated than I thought.

To make matters worse, another dangerous paranormal knows about the prophecy—and my connection to it. The closer I get to fulfilling my destiny, the more desperate they are to make sure that when I die again, it’s permanent.

Elemental Outcast is the first book in a young adult urban fantasy action adventure series, filled with vampires, shifters, witches, and more. If you like your books with a healthy dose of pulse-pounding fights, snark, sinister magic, and a slow-burn romance between people who can’t stand falling for each other, then the Elemental Outcasts series is for you!

Review: A Very Friendly Valentine’s Day

Are you ready for Valentine’s Day romance books to be a thing, because A Very Friendly Valentine’s Day has here for all of them!

This was so unique – the majority of the story takes place on an Amtrak train from LA to Chicago. I don’t think I’ve ever read a romance that takes place on a train before!

Eddie is heading to New York City to meet his Instagram girlfriend for the first time for Valentine’s Day. His best friend, who also happens to be a girl, Birdie, has a New Year’s resolution to see NYC, and scheduled her trip over Valentine’s Day as well, total coincidence. But Birdie is afraid to fly, and Eddie decides to ride the rails with her to make sure she gets to the East Coast safely.

The fun begins when the two board the train in LA and realize their family suite isn’t very large. And they’ll be spending the next 3 days in very tight quarters.

I definitely found myself laughing out loud as Birdie and Eddie tried to navigate living in the small living  space and the train travel, and their feelings for each other.

The sexy, steamy scenes were steamy but also felt very honest and realistic. So did the feelings between two friends who were finally coming to terms with their romantic feelings for one another.

This was a fun, cute read, and definitely had me dreaming of long train adventures.

A Very Friendly Valentine’s Day tied into Kayley Loring’s A Very Bossy Christmas, but can definitely be read as a standalone.

Thank you to Give Me Books PR and author Kayley Loring for the advance copy of this book in exchange for my honest opinion!

Review: Mistletoe and Mr. Right

I loved The Tourist Attraction when I read it last year. Zoey and Graham and the town of Moose Springs just warmed my heart.

Zoey’s friend Lana, on the other hand, was my least favorite character in the book. Right from the beginning of The Tourist Attraction, Lana rubbed me the wrong way.

However, Mistletoe and Mr. Right is Lana’s story of finding love and romance. I was so excited to spend time in Moose Springs, but a little wary of spending multiple hours with Lana.

That said, Lana comes off much more sympathetic and likable in this book.

Lana is spending the holidays in Moose Springs – her family is all over the world working on deals and with clients for the Montgomery Group. She’s been in Moose Springs working on the Moose Springs deal to build condos above the town.

Lana’s budding relationship with the town’s billiard hall owner is sweet. I enjoyed watching as the two of them grew their friendship and eventually their romantic feelings.

I found myself warming up to Lana, and loved visiting with Graham and Zoey and the doggy Jake. And I definitely found myself laughing at some of the antics that they all got into throughout the holiday season in Moose Springs.

While this is the second book in the Moose Springs series, it can definitely be read and enjoyed as a standalone.

Thank you to Sourcebooks Casablanca and NetGalley for this ARC in exchange for my honest review.

Review: Thorn of the Night Blossoms

This is a such a fast paced read! The Thorn of the Night Blossoms drops the reader right into the middle of the story and it took me a minute to catch up and catch my breath.

I really enjoyed the world building in this and I’m looking forward to spending more time in this world as I continue reading the Scions of the Black Lotus series.

I do wish there had been more information about the Clan and who they are or what they are working towards. Hopefully there will be more information as I read further into the series.

At novella length (only 179 pages) this was a fun read.

BLURB:

Raised in a clan of imperial spies and assassins, half-elf orphan Jie has only known a love for the blade… until now.

During a deep cover mission, a forbidden affection blossoms with a fellow clan member.

When rebels learn their true identity, and Jie uncovers a plot against the emperor, she must choose between love and duty.

Because when faced with brewing rebellion, your decisions could save an empire…Or topple it.

Thank you to JC Kang and Book of Matches Media for the gifted copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

Review: Swept Away

I am so sad that Swept Away in the end of the Wildfire Lake series. I loved spending time with this group of characters and becoming immersed in the town of Wildfire.

While Swept Away is the third book in the series, you can definitely read these out of order, or read this one as a standalone.

Swept Away is Chloe’s story. Chloe, KT and Layla became friends during a sudden cyclone that hit a yoga and meditation retreat Chloe was teaching and KT and Layla were attending.

Chloe is such a relatable character for me. She’s been hurt by a previous relationship and doesn’t want to get involved because she’s still healing from the betrayal.

However, Xavier has been in love with Chloe sine he moved to Wildfire, but was friend-zoned because of Chloe’s inability to open herself to new romantic relationships. But when the man who hurt Chloe so much comes to town, Xavier finds the perfect opportunity to escape the friend-zone, even if it’s just an act.

This is a really cute friends-to-lovers romance. I really enjoyed the growth from friends to lovers – not to mention the tension and the heat – with Chloe and Xavier.

I also found myself sitting and thinking about my breathing and my inner thoughts as Chloe thought about her inner monologue or taught a meditation class.

At under 300 pages, this short romance read is a swift read, but definitely packs a punch. With less than 40 pages left, I was on the edge of my seat wondering how the author was possibly going to tie things up!

Thank you to the author, Skye Jordan, for gifting me with a finished copy of this book in exchange for my honest opinion!

There’s nothing better than a packed house on a Saturday night, and co-owning the hottest restaurant and bar in town with my best friends, isn’t so bad either. We put everything into Burgers and Brew. My job is to keep the alcohol moving and the patrons coming back for more. I won’t let anyone break my focus.

Mallory

When I started my new job at a local specialty burger restaurant, I wasn’t expecting to find a tall, dark, and devastatingly handsome distraction in the form of Walker Meyer. He’s one of the owners, which means hands off. Only problem, it’s a lot easier said than done.

Especially when he’s so good with my daughter.

I try to keep him at a distance, but he’s insistent, slowly breaking down every one of my walls. He’s fighting to convince me I can trust him with not only my heart, but my daughter’s too.

I pray he’s right.

Review: In a Holidaze

This was 100% a Bookstagram made me do it, purchase. In a Holidaze was such a fun book to end 2020 on.

Mae and her family, spend Christmas in Utah with their extended chosen family. On the way to the airport, Mae makes a wish to the universe to “show her what makes her happy.” Then her family’s car is t-boned by an oncoming truck on the way to the airport, and Mae wakes up back on the plane heading to Utah, at the beginning of their Christmas celebrations and stuck in a time loop.

This was such a cute story about family – the one we are born into and the one we choose – and finding and being yourself. I definitely got Groundhog Day vibes from this story.

I will say, I wanted to know more about how and why the time looping started and ended, it almost felt forgotten. Or, I maybe I wanted another loop thrown in in the 2nd half of the book?

I really liked Mae, I thought she was an easy character to root for and relate to – someone who is a pleaser and is learning how to be who she really is through the time-looping.

I also thought the relationship came together a little too quickly and smoothly, but in a sweet romcom, I also didn’t want too much drama, either.

I also like the chosen family dynamic. Mae’s mom and dad are divorced, but still spent every Christmas together with their friends from college at this cabin in Utah. It’s their tradition to come together every year and the group’s traditions made that crazy time between Christmas and New Year’s feel extra cozy for me as I read.
